Become a Coach or Volunteer and Make a Difference

First Tee – Greater Washington, DC relies heavily on volunteer support to make our programs successful.  So if you are looking to volunteer with young people in DC, Northern Virginia, Montgomery County, MD, or Prince George’s County, MD and enjoy the game of golf we are the spot!

We’re Looking for You

We offer volunteer opportunities throughout the year.  The volunteer opportunities include working with participants during Life Skills Experience Classes, playing golf with participants, helping create awareness of the program and administrative assistance.  All of our opportunities allow volunteers to give back to their local community. We ask that volunteers assisting with Life Skills Experience Classes be at least 16 years of age. Younger volunteers can assist in other ways!

The Experience

“The secret ingredient of The First Tee is the unwavering commitment to making it fun. For the kids, it’s the noodles, the brightly colored targets, the creative games, and even the social and life skills that make it fun. For me, it’s the kids themselves. From kids who don’t know which end of the club to hold right up to the ones with swings that look ready for a mini-tour. We have a fantastic group.”
– John Diamond, 2019 Raul Colon Volunteer of the Year

What is else expected of me?

We conduct programming in 6 week sessions that run from March – October. Once the schedule is confirmed, volunteers will get a preview of the schedule. They will then be contacted to fill out their availability and receive a confirmation with their assigned days and times.   -To view the currently schedule, please click here.    Classes are conducted almost daily across our locations. Volunteers are able to select a class day and time and come to as many of those classes as possible! We ask that you arrive 15 minutes prior to the start of class. If you are unable to attend a session you have signed up for, please let us know by emailing the coach or Program Manager for the location.

Are you a First Tee – Greater Washington, D.C. Participant looking to give back?

Do you remember a volunteer during your early days with First Tee? Maybe you still keep in touch with them! Now you have the chance to be that role model for a younger participant. We are looking for participants Birdie and above (or High School age non First Tee Participants) that are interested in joining our PLAYer kids on the course as volunteers.    Volunteer duties consist of helping your location’s coach with set up, clean up and activities during class but most importantly serving as a mentor to our PLAYer participants.  Our expectations are that you arrive at your location 15 minutes early and when you are signed up to help. We understand that life happens, so if something comes up please let us know as soon as possible.   If you are interested in starting this process, please email [email protected]

In compliance with the Safe Sport Act of 2017, all volunteers will be REQUIRED to complete the US Center for Safesport online training. This training is 90 minutes and will be taken every year. First Tee HQ will be covering the cost of training in 2020. Cost is typically $14.99 for year one and $9.99 each year after.

As you consider volunteering for our chapter, know that the safety of our kids is our first priority.  Please read our Prevention Policies to see how we conduct programs and activities at our chapter.
